HOW CAFE RACER MOTORCYCLES ARE EMBEDDED INTO VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE HISTORY?

If you know about the image that is connected with each motorcycle style, you might know that café racers are connected to a sense of rebellion. Long before any other motorcycle style was considered common, the café racer style started off as a rebellious effort among the young motorcyclists who were more into speed, leather fashion, and motorcycle groups.

The idea is that motorcyclists who share the passion for two-wheelers would sit together at nearby open cafes and when they would see someone riding a really fancy and fast motorcycle, they chase the rider. Most of these riders would later end up joining the groups. Since it was all about speed, the members of these groups would find out ways to improve the speed of their motorcycles.

One of the most common ways was to reduce the body weight so the engine could perform much better. This was the earliest form of modification that was ever used by motorcyclists. With low body weight, you might be able to increase the speed but this could actually cause a lot of issues with the suspension and overall safety. As a result, the café racer style was known to be the toy of rebellious kids looking for attention.

This might be true for someone who has no idea about the motorcycle culture but you can see that it truly shaped the way motorcycles are designed today for racing and comfort. As a beginner looking for answers about motorcycle history, here is everything you need to know about motorcycle culture and how it changed things over the years. We will also look at ways it shaped the design, and motorcycle modification and how it inspired the brands to improve the design and performance of the new models.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE EARLY HISTORY OF CAFE RACER

Back in the 1950 and ’60s, cafe racers were very common in the UK. These were mainly used by the motorcycle gang known as the rockers or ton-up boys. The goal of these members was to show their skills but also promote the early biking culture, being a free spirit and inspiring the fashion scene. Later during the sixties, this motorcyclist would hang out and discuss things in open cafes. These cafes were nitrous for being the socialization point of the motorcycle enthusiast. However, the bad name was brought to this mainly because of the illegal racing culture.

Starting just as the British racing culture, these motorcyclists also started appearing everywhere else. Their goal was to build a faster motorcycle with a very lean body structure so they would generally strip down the body just to reduce the weight. Apart from reducing weight, they would also swap the engines and frames so their motorcycle could perform much better.

These hybrids of different branded engines, frames, and bodies would create a different style of motorcycle that was much faster, lighter, and would also offer better performance. This can be seen as an inspiration to the modern-day café racers as well. Since these motorcycles were made by combining two different brands they would usually be given hybrid names as well. Some of the common names include Norvin, Triton, etc.

HOW IT EVOLVED?

Now the café racers are not limited to British brands there are so many different brands that offer the latest style of café racers but there are no British brands. Instead, you will find some of the finest brands from a completely different origin mainly from Europe. Now there are so many brands to choose from and all these brands have the latest models with much better shape as well. Some of the main café racers models that you can find in the market include Honda CB750, Yamaha SR400, Triumph Hinkley Bonnevilles, etc.

The modern-style café racer is pretty light and usually has a solo seat. This represents that it is not designed for passengers and true racers only. Similarly, if you look at the engine, you will see some of the best and most powerful engines are installed in café racers. Usually, most café racers have parallel-twin engines that offer a boost in speed. They also have a flat seat so the motorcycle can glide without facing too much friction. The tank style is also very sleek and perfectly complements the body.
